New Country Day camp is a great camp to get some outdoor time for city kids. Its a great place for kids to go and come home excited and tired!
The afterschool program does not have any bullying policies. It does not adhere to the NYC DOE stricter bullying policies. The afterschool program does have some behavior policy which seems infective. There are about 100 children in the afterschool program and not enough personnel to supervise the kids. If your child is getting picked on, kicked or punched do not expect any effective action from this program. Bullying is tolerated and seen as a minor behaviour problem. The swimming program is great.
The camps and after school programs may be ok, but the fitness center is AWFUL. You will join and then you will receive a letter one month later informing you that the rates are going up. The place is cramped and dirty. Not worth the money at all.
14 st Y is wonderful. My son has been going for 3 years and really enjoys it. He makes friends, has adventures, learns new things and swims in a beautiful pool twice a day.The counselors seem very involved and caring and very conscious of the children's safety.
Gani is a great school which has a loving community feeling. My daughters run into the classroom every morning, eager to learn and explore. The teachers are excellent and the new director is bright, warm and creative in her approach. We stumbled onto Gani by chance and could not be happier.
The administrative staff, for the most part, are almost comically incompetent and rude. Expect repeat billing problems and miscommunication. But the teachers in 2x2, Gani and the swim program are wonderful. We've loved all the classes, and Kiki (who runs the parenting program) is amazing.
There are two programs in this building that are actually good, Aquatics and Sports programs. All other programs are too expensive and not worth it. Since the change in management, this organization leaves a lot to be desired. Several months ago, the management asked the clients to come to this website and post positive comments about them. You must wonder about that, when they cant even boost their ratings on merit! I will not be returning to the 14th Street Y, EVER!
Lost in all of the comments is that THERE IS A PRESCHOOL! The Gani Preschool at the 14th Street Y will take your 2 year old from 9 to 1 or 3 each day. You don't need to be there. They don't need to be toilet trained. I have sent and am currently sending my children there, and I have to say that all the comments here are true. They are "rebuilding" and they haven't gotten their act totally together yet, but it is a really great facility and what they offer in terms of scheduling and great teachers just can't be beat.
We started taking music & swimming when our 2 1/2 year old was an infant & have continued from there. The mini-camp & 2x2 programs have been enriching and fun for our entire family & the guidance that is given at the Parenting & Family Center is tremendous. The staff is loving & informed--guiding families to be their best. The facilites are older, but clean. It's a treasure, to be sure.
My family and I have been going to the Goldman Y for 17 years. It is an older facility, but the swimming program is great. My kids were especially happy with the pool. They both learned to swim there and are great swimmers now. The kids classes are fun and they learn a lot. The staff if very responsive and are quite good with the kids. I would recommend the Y swim classes to anyone in the community. It is especially helpful for new mothers and fathers. You and your kids will find new friends there, too. The Daycare, Camps and Japanese family groups are also quite good and bring a real feeling and sense of the community. There are also basketball, a good exercise room, dance, drama, music, etc. available. The Y welcomes people of all ethnicities. We feel quite strongly about the Goldman Y and we would recommend it to any familys in the area. It is a great resource.
I have taken many classes at the Y with my 17 month old son. We both love the parenting classes, mommy baby exercise classes, and the baby belugas (baby swim) class. I have found the staff to be helpful and friendly, particularly on issues related to being a new mom. I also love being a party of the community there. It is an excellent place for families. I highly reccommend it.
The thought is there - but the skills to put it into place aren't. You need more than good will to run an organization involved in childcare. The scary thing is that not only is incompetent supervision bad for a childs development it's also risky.
