The DC area offers a variety of entertaining ways for kids and families to celebrate Kwanzaa! Saturday, December 6 The National Museum of African Art celebrates with a free, all-day Kwanzaa Family Festival, featuring arts and crafts; storytelling; performances by Aysha Upchurch's Life, Rhythm, Move Project and the Yacouba Mask Society stilt walkers; and a screening of the film The Black Candle (NR). Saturday, December 13 Museum staff at the Alexandria Black History Museum present a free Kwanzaa Craft and Game Workshop, which includes an overview of the principles of Kwanzaa as well as instruction on how to make Kwanzaa gifts known as zawadi. Saturday, December 20 Coyaba Dance Theatre performs its annual Kwanzaa Celebration at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, with special appearances by the students of Dance Place's youth and adult African dance classes. Saturday, December 27 Performance groups from throughout the metro area come together at the Publick Playhouse for a Kwanzaa Celebration featuring dancing, drumming, traditional music, and storytelling. Saturday, December 27 through Wednesday, December 31 The Anacostia Community Museum hosts three special free events in celebration of Kwanzaa, starting with Kwanzaa Stories with Baba-C on December 27. Brother Ah and The Sounds of Awareness present Kwanzaa: A Musical Tribute on December 29, and finally, artist Wanda Aikens conducts a Kwanzaa Family Workshop on making scented and edible items for the holiday on December 31.
