about Free Thinking: Independence:

What's free for kids and families in Independence? As President Truman might say of his hometown, "The buck stops here." The free Harry S Truman National Historical Site's visitors center - located just off of the town's historic Independence Square - introduces Truman through a short film. Kids ages five through 12 can pick up a junior ranger booklet at the center, fill it out, and then get sworn in back at the visitor's center. (Touring the house isn't necessary to answer all the questions.)

The Children's Peace Pavilion inside the Community of Christ Auditorium is also free, interactive, and thought-provoking for children as they examine peace both internally and globally. Be sure and check out the impressive Community of Christ Temple across the street with its 300-foot spire. Independence is the international headquarters for the denomination, and tours are free.

The Bass Pro in Independence also is a great free resource for families. The store offers free workshops for kids about every month, plus there's the gigantic fish tanks, checkers games, and wooden rockers set up at the back of the store, overlooking a small lake.

Those looking for even more outdoor experiences can try out the hiking trails at George Owens Nature Park, or if it's too cold, head over to the spacious indoor play area at Independence Center.
