Think Gold Rush and the Wild West - both eras merge in
Historic Downtown Golden, a community cradled at the foot of the Rocky Mountain Front Range, and located about 15 west of downtown Denver.
The business district has several retail stores, gift boutiques, cafes, and galleries. Many are located along the main thoroughfare, Washington Avenue, which is streetscaped with trees, planters, brick, flagstone, and ornamental street lights.
Clear Creeks runs through downtown, offering a perfect place to stroll and take in the mountain views - head to
Parfet Park to find the creek and its footpaths.
Many museums and cultural centers are located within the district, including
Golden Pioneer Museum & History Center,
Clear Creek History Park, and
Miners Alley Playhouse.
In close proximity: The Colorado School of Mines,
Heritage Square, the National Earthquake Information Center, the Coors Brewing Company, the
American Mountaineering Center, and the
Colorado Railroad Museum.
The Visitors Center is a good place for out-of-towners. An army of volunteers keeps it well staffed, and they're always very happy to provide maps, directions, and recommendations. Pamphlets describing local attractions are plentiful and free for the taking. A shady side patio offers a good place to rest and watch the creek.
