The Queen Anne-style Lucy Haskell Playhouse was built in 1885 for the young daughter of Dr. William A. Haskell. There is some evidence that prominent local architect Lucas J. Pfeiffenberger might have designed the structure.
Years after Lucy's death at age nine, the Haskell family bequeathed the house to the City of Alton to use for educational and recreational purposes. It was designated a National Register Historic Landmark in 1974.
