A 25-foot fiberglass statue of the Virgin Mary, mounted atop a 20-foot pedestal, overlooks the Mississippi River and the tiny town of Portage des Sioux.
The shrine was erected during the 1950s, following widespread flooding that was destructive to communities all along the Mississippi, with the exception of Portage des Sioux. The story goes that a pastor of the town's St. Francis Parish asked his worshippers to pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary using the name Our Lady of the Rivers. When the town was spared, parishioners decided to erect a statue on the banks of the river, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rivers. Today, the shrine hosts the annual Blessing of the Fleet each July.
