about Price's Chicken Coop:

A nondescript red brick exterior and unadorned cinder block interior belie the poultry poetry that is crafted at Price's Chicken Coop. After reading Gourmet Magazine's high praise of the restaurant's "birds of paradise," we couldn't wait to check it out for ourselves during a recent visit to the Queen City. The chicken - battered and deep-fried in 100% vegetable oil - is amazing: tender and juicy, with a crispy, lightly seasoned exterior that first crumbles, then melts in your mouth. It's truly addictive. Meals come with a heaping pile of Tater Rounds, delicious hush puppies, serviceable cole slaw, and a soft white roll. Sides of fried chicken livers and gizzards are equally popular with regular customers. Rumor has it that Price's also sells barbecued pork, fish, and burgers, but chicken reigns supreme. We suggest rounding out your meal with a glass of sweet tea and a fried apple pie. The humble storefront offers take-out only and is always bustling (be careful when opening the door, as there's surely someone standing directly behind it). Once inside, jump in a line and turn off your cell phone - the no-nonsense folks at the registers don't take kindly to customers chatting it up while placing their orders. No checks or plastic are accepted here, but with most meals coming in under $6, you won't need much cash. Finding a place to park can be a little tricky on this busy South End side street, but we managed to secure a spot in the back on each of our excursions (yes, we visited the Coop twice in one week!). Look carefully before turning into the narrow entrance - there are always lots of hungry folks coming and going.
