about Rocky Mountain National Park:
The park offers all kinds of hiking opportunities - from casual routes to strenuous, multi-day excursions. The park is known for its stunning, glacier-fed lakes, which offer pristine, picture-perfect picknicking spots.
Summer activities include camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and mountaineering; wintertime brings opportunities in snowshoeing, snow-mobiling, cross-country skiing, and - at the winter play area located at Hidden Valley - sledding. Winter condition reports are made daily, and visitors are urged to call ahead before making any trek outdoors.
For those with nerves of steel, a drive up (and up and up) Trail Ridge Road - known as the "highway to the sky" - leads to spectacular views of the Continental Divide and the Front Range.
Families with children in tow will want to explore the myriad "junior ranger" opportunities; stop at any of the visitor centers to pick up the booklet and learn about earning a special badge. At the Fall River Visitor Center, kids can explore animal skins, ranger uniforms, and other items in the Discovery Room. The website offers a list of the visitor centers and their operating hours.
