When Boston's Big Dig project plunged previously elevated roadways underground,
The Greenway, a mile-long ribbon of parks and green space, was created.
Three named parks are nearly completed (2008):
Chinatown Park: The design theme of this park is represented by elements that have significance within the Asian culture: gates, a bridge, and water.
North End Parks: The design of this park serves to reconnect the urban fabric that was severed by the Central Artery.
Wharf District Parks: These parks serve as a threshold from downtown to the harbor and comprise approximately 5 acres. The northern section of the park is adjacent to the
New England Aquarium and
Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market.
Dewey Square Parks: This section of the Greenway, comprised of four and a half acres of open space that straddles
South Station and the Financial District, will open in several phases.
