Abalone Cove Beach and Ecological Reserve451

This is one of the most beautiful beaches in LA, unfortunately the steep hike and the "natural" setting may not be suitable for kids under 5. There are no bathrooms or refreshments down the hill, but there are plenty of critters, including urchins, sea stars, shellfish, pelicans, sea lions, sand sharks, spiders and fleas. The tide pools are amazing but difficult to navagate and access to the caves is dangerous even for adults. In all, my ocean crazy 8 year old was in heaven, my five year old liked it but hated the walk and my 3 year old was miserable (so was Dad when he had to carry her up the ravine). Despite all of the difficulties, this destination has left us with many fabulous memories and a treasure trove of gorgeous pictures. I reccommend it highly for the nature loving families out there.
