Founded in 1957 to protect the view from Mount Vernon across the Potomac River, the Accokeek Foundation, stewards 200 acres of Piscataway National Park, where visitors can hike a network of trails winding through wetlands, visit a native tree arboretum, and observe an award-winning forest restoration project.
Piscataway Park is home to bald eagles, beaver, deer, fox, osprey, and many other species. The park also has a public fishing pier and two boardwalks over fresh water tidal wetlands, a variety of nature trails, meadows, and woodland areas. Discovery Packs, self-guided educational kits, and birding kits (complete with field guides, binoculars, and a spotting scope) can be borrowed from the Visitor Center, and contain activities and information about the plants and animals found here.
The Foundation also runs the National Colonial Farm, a living history museum that depicts a Maryland middle-class family farm on the eve of the American Revolution. Weekend visitors to the National Colonial Farm may see sewing, cooking, spinning, dyeing, candlemaking, gardening, woodworking, and colonial games.
The Foundation also operates a Visitor Center and Museum Gift Shop. You can pick up a site map and informational brochures at the Visitor Center. The Gift Shop carries unique pottery, children's toys, jewelry, soaps and lotions, candles, and a variety of books on history and organic gardening.
