about Adventure Aquarium:

Adventure Aquarium isn't just about fish and denizens of the deep. Penguin Island (with a 20-foot underwater viewing area) and the West African river experience (complete with hippos, 20 species of free-flying birds, porcupines and more), and the 550,000-gallon Shark Realm (home to over 25 sharks) offer interesting insights into the importance of the substance that covers 70% of the earth's surface.

Kids gravitate to the touch exhibits, which contain live fish that visitors can touch (although this requires some stealth). Four other interactive, touch areas are located throughout the aquarium, allowing guests to experience and touch jellyfish, spider crabs, lobsters, sharks, and more. The Jules Verne Gallery, replete with 200 spooky moon jellies and mysterious and elusive Giant Pacific Octopus, is also a hit. On the second floor is the Creature Lab, an interactive exhibit that is home to all sorts of bizarre specimens of nature: electric eels, mudskippers (fish that live on land), the flashlight fish, and plenty of other strange and creepy creatures.

In the 4D Theater, presented by PSE&G, families can experience a show with 4D special effects (including wind, water spray, and motion) and a 3D film (viewed with 3D glasses).

Strollers are permitted in the building, and although there are lockers available, there is no place to check or park a stroller. Parents should also be aware that the wonderful shark realm exhibit ends in the gift shop, so those who want to avoid potential tantrums should go back through the shark exhibit to reach the exit or other exhibits.

An Adventure Passport to Adventure Aquarium (aka membership) offers year-round access to the exhibits, creative events and special programming. It pays for itself in just a few visits if you travel as a family of four.

Families can combine a visit to the aquarium with a stop next door at the Battleship New Jersey by purchasing a Fish 'n' Ship combination ticket.

Watson Adventures can arrange fun and funny private scavenger hunts inside Adventure Aquarium. For details, call 1.877.9GOHUNT, ext. 11.

tips:

Soggy sleeves are often a result of dipping into the underwater touch attractions. Wear short sleeves or bring an extra shirt for kids to change into. Be sure to pick up the daily show schedule from the Information Desk when you arrive, too.

getting there:

The aquarium is located on the Camden Waterfront, just minutes from Philadelphia's historic district and Penn's Landing via RiverLink ferry, car, or public transportation. A large multi-level parking garage is located across the street.
