A particular focus at Alexander Dawson School is developing students' analytical reading of literature and the practice of critical and creative writing. The reading curriculum is closely integrated with other areas of study, including geography, history, and science. Spanish instruction begins in kindergarten.

The school also strives to teach its students empathy, integrity, morality, courtesy, curiosity, responsibility, and an appreciation of diversity.

A wide variety of programs in the arts is also part of the school curriculum, including music, theater, and dance. Afterschool programs include yoga and fencing; sports are offered to the middle-school students.

Summer at Dawson is a summer camp for both school students and the community at large; the school also hosts the Summer Institute for the Gifted, a camp open to any child advanced in academics.
