The Alexandria Black History Museum is comprised of the Museum, the Watson Reading Room, and the Alexandria African American Heritage Park.
The museum, devoted to exhibiting local and regional history, was created by adding on to the former Robert H. Robinson Library - a historical one room facility built in 1939 following a sit-in at the then segregated Alexandria Library. It now serves as one of the museum's galleries. The Watson Reading Room provides an environment for learning about the diversity of African American cultural traditions. The Alexandria African American Heritage Park, a nine-acre green space and wetland, offers a place for celebration, commemoration, and quiet reflection.
