About Alice's Tea Cup

At Alice's Tea Cup, the winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Family-Friendly Restaurant in New York City, lovely little tea sets adorn the "shop" area around the cashier, in addition to teas, mugs, and Alice in Wonderland themed tchotckes. You can also order and pick up a special picnic box to take with you to the park.

In the restaurant, you'll find scones, soups, sandwiches, and a full morning or afternoon tea. Breakfast is served daily from 8am-11:30am and includes egg dishes, pancakes, specials, fresh coffee and, of course, tea and scones. Saturday and Sunday Brunch (all the breakfast options, plus crepes and French Toast Bread Pudding) is served from 8am-3:30pm. High chairs are available.

The Children's Menu features sandwiches of granny smith apple slices and peanut butter or nutella, grilled cheese, home made graham crackers, and pureed baby food.

Parents can customize kids' parties at Alice's Tea Cup, choosing from fairy dress-up parties or an Alice-themed party where Alice does tells stories and paints little faces... or try a magician's party with the Mad Hatter! Party favors, cakes, and more can be concocted. Call to consult. Parties may be held Mon-Thu during restaurant hours, and on Fri, Sat, or Sun after 3pm. The charge is $20 per child, which includes a Wee Tea for children under 10 years of age or the Nibble Menu for children between 10-15 years old. Adults are required to order the Mad Hatter tea service, at $27 a person.

On the birthday (and unbirthday) cake front, Alice's bakery can whip up a sheet cake or theme cake confection for off-site parties, too. Prices start at $55; check the website for photos and more info. Order at least a week in advance.

The single bathroom is sparkling clean and easy to keep an eye on, if the kids want to go on their own.

Tips

Have a party, and you can invite Alice herself (a very reasonable facsimile) to join you! Parties can be held on Friday afternoons after 4pm; Alice (at $125/hour) does face painting and reads to the kids. A magician, dressed like the Mad Hatter, is also available, at a fee of $175/hour.

Alice's Tea Cup is awesome!

I took my three year old niece and my 12 yr old nephew there for brunch yesterday. My nephew was grumbling about it being a sissy place at first, but he ended up having as much fun as my niece, lol.

The three year old got sparkling fairy wings to wear while we were there and they sprinkled her with fairy dust (glitter). She read Alice and Wonderland pop up books until our food arrived. We all had some very exotic teas with salad and desserts to die for! She had peanut butter and preserves on banana bread and the carrot cake was the best I ever had.

Definitely put it on the to do list!

absolutely a joy to visit and such wonderful staff. always there to lend a helping hand. bright and cheery, a breath of fresh air and just the whimsicality that you need when you are feeling like you need a little pep in your day. for the kid in everyone whether you're 5 or 50.

I consider myself one of the big kids even though I have none. Nothing makes me happier than seeing kids have a good time. Alice's does just that!

I brought my four year old and infant to the newest location (81st btwn 2nd and 3rd) and they were very accomodating for the lil ones! They brought books and toys for my son to play with and were very understanding when my daughter threw all her cheerios on the floor! Also, you must try the chocolate cake - it is divine! I am ordering one for my son's birthday party next month! (Prices are good, too!) I recommend the chicken sandwich, too - great for me and a four year old! A wonderful place to have in NYC!

I've been to all three Alice's and, although, I still love the west side location the best, I love them all. It is by far my favorite tea place and I've been drinking tea all my life. I also love that it's so child friendly and unstuffy, as some tea houses can be. Best and most imaginative scones I've ever had too!!!

I love this tea house!! And find it the perfect place to take my daughter, a close friend for tea or conduct a business lunch. It is charming, the food is great and they have an amazing array of teas, everything from classics to adventerous (and beware their baked goods!!). It is a haven on the upperwestside and one of my all time favourites.

i brought my family for the first time on the recommendation of friends and we are in love!!! everything from the food to the decor to the friendly staff is just so right! the tea selection is huge and i plan to come back again and again until i have eventually tried them all. our daughters (2 and 5 years old) got sprinkled with fairy dust when we arrived and it made them feel so special. my husband, a coffee drinker usually, loved his tea - a strong black tea that was recommended to him by our lovely waitress, who was wearing fairy wings!!! the scones were the best i've ever had. we have nothing but love for this magical little spot. can't wait to try the east side one!

I would think twice about bringing small children here. I agree with an earlier poster that the food is a little kid unfriendly. I also felt the room was a bit gloomy and cheerless. The wooden chairs are mismatched, so are not all the same height, nor are they particularly comfortable.

I love Alices on the upper west side. I went with my friends in 2004, we have a tea ladies group that meets once per month, and vowed when I had a daughter I would bring her there. My daughter was born in November of 2005. When she was only 9 days old I brought her to Alices. They sat me in a corner on the bench seating. It was cozy. I could nurse my daughter descreetly and have lunch. Now that my daughter is in a high chair we have been to Alice's two additional times. The food is wonderful, especially the daily scone offerings, and the tea list has over 100 selections. They also have a soup of the day. They offer 2 scones & pot of tea for $9! The decor is phenomenal! The place is always full of children ages infant to 99.

I purchased the coupon book, which entitled me to a by one entree get one entree free. My waitress said she could not accept the coupon. When she called the manager and asked he said no. He said it was for the Alice's Tea Cup in Manhattan. The coupon clearly stated that it was for the one in City Island. Needless to say, I will never go back there again.

I had a small birthday celebration for my 10-year old niece. The food was a little too "New York City" for her, there was nothing plain and simple on the menu. Also, I asked to have the table cleared before the cake was brought out and it wasn't. This gorgeous creation was presented amongst dirty dishes and food. The wait staff was a little too young and self-involved to care. Finally, the tea was just okay (and I drink a LOT of tea).
