The Animal Rescue League of Iowa takes in almost 20,000 abused and homeless animals each year, and offers animals for adoption as well as educational programming for pet owners. Parties: Animal-loving kids ages six to 10 can schedule their birthday parties at the main shelter. The two-hour parties cost about $100 and are typically offered weekend afternoons, with games and activities including decorating doggie "cookies" to feed to the dogs! Volunteering: Wannebe volunteers ages 12 and up can attend one of the free orientations held at the training center behind the main shelter on the second Saturday of the month. Kids under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Junior Volunteers ages eight to 11 cannot have animal contact, but can assist adult volunteers at the Southridge Adoption Center and in the small animal room at the main shelter.
