The historic Athens Theatre opened in 1922, and presented silent movies, vaudeville shows, and live theater performances. The theater evolved through the decades, offering movies, community theater, dinner theater, and teen entertainment. Closed in the early 1990s, the theater has since been refurbished and reopened to offer films and live entertainment to the DeLand community.
The Athens actively seeks films that were shot in Florida or contain Florida themes for screening. Student filmmakers at the middle school, high school, and college level are also encouraged to submit films for screening consideration.
