The
Civic Center was recently brought back to its art-deco splendor and is home to a variety of facilities, including city offices, the renovated
public library, police department, and fire department. Family activities take place seasonally.
During the summer, a
Public Art Walking Tour offers a guided walking tour of Beverly Hills' prime public art works located in the vicinity of the
Civic Center. Architect William Gage created the building in typical government style of the early 1930's: a low, classical base symbolizing government surmounted by a tower that represents commerce. But the beauty of the building, with its eight-story tower, tiled dome, and gilded cupola, transcends the typical government building and after 50 years of service, it was showing signs of age.
A renovation project begun in 1982, restored the terrazzo floors, marble walls, and intricate ceilings. The building was brought up to modern earthquake standards and building codes. Dedicated in 1990, the
Beverly Hills Civic Center expands on City Hall's Spanish Renaissance architecture, thanks to the exquisite eye and work of architect Charles Moore.
