Bishop Gorman is a Las Vegas institution that has lost its edge. When the Viatorians ran the school, you could expect a classical Catholic school education, but those glory days for Gorman are long past. The new Summerlin campus can, in no way, make up for the turmoil happening within the Gorman organization. The fact that the new campus is a year late and nearly $40 million over budget is only the tip of the iceberg. Bishop Gorman has really become strictly a sports school. If you are looking for top quality academics in Las Vegas, this is not the place to send your kid. If your kid wants to play basketball or football and has the capability to eventually "go pro", this is definitely the place in Las Vegas for you. The most telling fact about the state of academics is that 70 of their students last year couldn't pass the Nevada Proficiency Test, which is a requirement for a high school diploma at Nevada Public Schools and tests, largely, for 8th grade level skills. This is not the fault of the teachers, but of an Administration that is in dire need of fresh ideas and new leadership. Money talks at Gorman. You can fully expect that the children of wealthy donors will get far more attention than those of an average parishoner. If you donate enough money to Gorman, your kid can get anything, including a parking space with his or her name over it in the faculty lot. This doesn't seem like the Catholic school way, or the reason why parents should send their kid to a Catholic school. On a positive note, the teachers are, generally, very, very committed to their students and the students, themselves, are largely exceptionally well behaved, but don't expect your kid to learn the importance of Catholic values from the actions of the Administration at Gorman. A Catholic education should instill dicipline and morality in a student, not that the rules are completely negotable, depending on who you are in the Vegas community.
