Slavery, the daily lives of Missouri black citizens in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the civil rights movement - all are documented at the small The Griot Museum of Black History & Culture with candor, sensitivity, and historic accuracy. Griot is pronounced GREE-oh and, in some African countries, refers to a highly respected member of the community who collects, preserves, and shares the stories and objects of the community.
An exhibit of Dr. Martin Luther King's life especially resonates with younger children; they also often find great interest in the replicas both of a slave cabin and of living quarters from the ships that brought African slaves to America.
The museum's History Hunt, designed for families and school groups, is a unique way to learn about the musuem's collections: It's a list of people and events covered in the museum and encourages kids to seek out information. Pick this up as you enter the museum.
