about Blue & Gold Fleet:

Blue & Gold Fleet offers one of the more extensive selections of tours in town. It's also a dependable way for commuters to get back and forth between the city and Tiburon/Sausalito, Vallejo, Oakland, and Alameda.

The popular Bay Cruise Adventure, which lasts about an hour, is a nice introduction to the city, as well as other noteworthy sites on San Francisco Bay, and offers the novelty of doing it by water. You'll ferry under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Sausalito, Angel Island and around the notorious island of Alcatraz. Along the way you'll hear an account of the City's history and beauty through the eyes of Captain Nemo, his crew and other friendly personalities.

You can also take the San Francisco City Tour, a motorized coach tour that runs 3 1/2 hours with photo opportunities at the extended stops in various locations. Other land tours include Muir Woods, Yosemite, Wine Country, and Monterey/Carmel. Check the Blue & Gold web site for details.

Angel Island is a short 20-minute ferry ride from Pier 41. This former mandatory stop for over a million Russian, Asian, and Pacific Basin immigrants entering the United States in the early 1900s was also home of the famous military garrison, Fort McDowell, during the Civil War era. Amenities available on the island seasonally include bike rentals, the Cove Cafe, a narrated TramTour, and a Segway Tour.

tips:

Dress in layers; it's cold and windy on the water no matter how sunny the skies.

getting there:

Garages are expensive in this area and free parking hard to find. Take public transportation to Pier 41. Bus 32 takes you right there. Or take the Muni to the Embarcadero station and the F-line up the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf.
