The
Blue Hills Reservation which adjoins Fowl Meadow Reservation is the largest open space within 35 miles of Boston. The over 6,600 acres is home to hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Many rare or endangered species in Massachusetts, such as the Timber Rattlesnake, can also be found here.
The reservation boasts 20 hilltops, more than 50 prehistoric sites, 16 historic structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 3 National Environmental Study Areas, and a National Historic Landmark - the
Blue Hills Meteorological Observatory. On Route 138, the
Trailside Museum, operated for the
DCR by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, houses excellent exhibits of the reservation's natural and cultural history and offers a variety of public programs.
Ponkapoag Golf Course, also within the reservation on Route 138, is an outstanding 36-hole course. Downhill skiing on man-made snow is seasonally available at Great Blue Hill.
