about Bolivar Ferry:

For a unique view of Galveston Bay and a fun boat trip, this free ferry service provided by TxDOT is the only way motorists can cross the waterway from Galveston Island to Bolivar Peninsula. Then spend the day at Crystal Beach on the other side.

For those who like boats, views of huge freighters coming in and out of the busy Houston Ship Channel are exciting. And you might even see some porpoises popping in and out of the water! Passengers can also feed the gulls at the back of the ferry, so bring some bread to throw.

The 2.7-mile trip takes approximately 18 minutes to cross one of the busiest waterways in the world. Each boat can carry approximately 70 vehicles and 500 passengers.

tips:

Wait times for cars on holidays and weekends in the summer can be especially long. One option is to park and walk aboard, so you don't have to wait at the end of the long line in your car for the return trip. Check Houston Transtar's website [www.houstontranstar.org/ferrywaittimes] for updated wait times.

getting there:

Take I-45 South to Galveston Island. The highway turns into Broadway. Stay on Broadway across the island, and follow the signs to the ferry.
