The
Boston Harbor Islands are made up of 30 islands that spread over 50 square miles of Boston Harbor.
Georges, Lovells, Peddocks,
Bumpkin, Grape, Little Brewster,
Spectacle, and
World's End islands are the ones most frequented by visitors. Tours, cruises, educational programs, and special events are scheduled during the spring and summer season. Check the website or our calendar for upcoming event information.
Two
national historic landmarks are located on the islands: Fort Warren on George's Island and
Boston Light on Little Brewster Island, at the entrance of Boston Harbor. Boston Light has the distinction of being the
oldest lighthouse site in the nation.
Other historical points of interest are Fort Andrews on Peddocks Island and Fort Standish on Lovells Island. Ruins from several past occupancies including military installations and hospitals are found on Gallops and Bumpkin islands.
Visitors can stop at one of two national park service
information booths when planning a trip to any of the islands. An
information kiosk staffed by park service rangers is located on Long Wharf next to the ferry ticket booth, across from the
New England Aquarium. The Harbor Islands Express ferry ticket booth is located on
Long Wharf by
Christopher Columbus Park. The
National Park Area Discovery Center is located at Fan Pier at the U.S. Courthouse. Call 617.223.8666 to reach either location.
Free summer events are available. For more information please visit the website.
