about Bradner Gardens Park:

The air in this hilltop garden smells sweet and spicy, and is aflutter with birds and insects. Urban organic gardening reigns supreme here, as shown by the demonstration gardens maintained in partnership with Seattle Tilth and other local gardening organizations, and the native plant habitat.

The kids in our group didn't care much about organic gardening, but this spot had something to tickle all their senses - intriguing scents, lots of ladybugs, plants that begged to be touched, funny-looking scarecrows, and wide paths for running. The adults appreciated the shaded picnic area and expansive view of the city.

Wander the gravel paths with your kids, and let them discover the funky garden art and hidden stepping stones, the children's garden and A-Z garden (a perennial for every letter of the alphabet), the basketball court with one short basket for little kids, and a dry "streambed" that climbers will find irresistible. Look for the play area that features a carved tractor and kid-friendly plantings.

getting there:

From I-5 (north- and southbound): Take the I-90 exit. Immediately take the next off ramp to Rainier Avenue South. Travel south on Rainier Avenue South to South Massachussets Street. Turn east onto South Massachussets Street to 29th Avenue South. Turn right and travel one block to the garden. Look for small directional signs in the neighborhood. Public transportation: Served by Metro bus routes 14 and 987.
