Children's classes at
Brooklyn Aikikai are separated by age groups: six to eight year-olds and nine to 12 year-olds. The younger group has class on Mondays from 4pm to 4:40pm; older children can attend from 4:45pm to 5:40pm. Both age groups can attend class Saturdays from 9am to 10am. Dues are $75 per month. Students must commit to attend practice at least once a week.
Kids ages seven to 12 are eligible for the
Aikido Kids Camp summer program, where they can learn the basics of aikido, a non-competitive martial art also called "the way of harmony." Midday Japanese cultural activities include haiku, origami, ink brush painting, and learning to draw manga superheroes! Field trips include visits to the
Metropolitan Museum,
Brooklyn Museum, and
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as well as picnics and sprinklers in a nearby playground.
