Brooklyn Children's Museum, the
winner of our 2008
Parents' Picks quest to find the
Best Museum for Little Kids and Big Kids in Brooklyn, is the world's first museum for children - it has been up and running since 1899!
BCM offers innovative hands-on exhibitions, daily workshops and programs, and weekend multicultural performances.
World Brooklyn, its showcase exhibit, is made up of kid-sized shops, all interactive, that range from a Chinese stationery store (origami) to a Mexican bakery. The grocery store boasts a working conveyor belt.
Neighborhood Nature, is a trek through Brooklyn's natural habitats where kids can get a bug's-eye view inside a giant log and meet real horseshoe crabs at the Touch Tank tide pool. Stop by the Science Inquiry Center to meet more of the museum's live animals, including basilisks, turtles, and a 20-foot Burmese python.
Totally Tots is designed for little ones (five and under) and includes water play, sand play, a climbing structure, and a baby zone with soft sculptures and floor-level mirrors.
Brooklyn Children's Museum is one of only a handful of children's museums nationally with a permanent collection. The ever-changing
Collections Central gallery features engaging activities using a selection of cultural objects and natural history specimens from the Museum's 30,000 piece collection.
Birthday parties at the museum are now open to the general public (not just members). Book well in advance.
BCAP hosts a very popular
summer camp program at the museum, for kids ages six to 12.
