The Buttonwood Park Zoo is nationally accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. It was established in 1894 and is the 12th oldest zoo in the United States. Nearly 200 species of animals are represented in the Buttonwood Park Zoo, ranging from tiny frogs to enormous elephants.
With just a couple of exceptions, all of the animals carry out the Zoo's theme, "From the Berkshires to the Sea." The focus is on the land- and water-based wildlife of Massachusetts, with special emphasis on creating the natural habitats in which the animals actually live.
The Buttonwood Park Wildlife Carousel features a chariot and 18 animals, many of which can be found in the zoo, such as the Asian elephant, seal and eagle. Tickets are $2.
Zoo Crew is a summer program designed especially for children ages 8 to 12. Each session has been developed to have a balance of outdoor and classroom learning, educational games and activities, crafts, and fun.
