Cagle's Dairy, the only producer-processor left in the state of Georgia, is an educational resource farm specializing in farm tours for school children.
Family and school tours of dairy and farm take about 1-1/2 hours and start with a hay ride and herding demonstration by award-winning Border Collies. Visitors can see baby calves being bottle fed, get a first-hand look at how a live cow is milked, and tour the Processing Facility. Tour perks include a free 1/2 pint of plain or chocolate milk. Reservations are required and can be made online.
Garden Tours are offered seasonally and include a walk through the garden to learn what foods look like growing, and harvesting of a ripe seasonal vegetable. The 'Master Gardeners' and/or Cagle's Dairy employees join Papa Albert as Garden Guides and teachers.
The Cagle's Dairy MaiZE, an intricate network of twists and turns carved into 10 acres of corn, runs from September to late November. The MaiZE represents the newest trend in agri-tainment for adults and children alike, and has attracted more than 1.2 million visitors prior to the start of this season. Small children ride a new Cow Wagon Train for a trip through the corn stalks (included with admission).
Stock Dog Trials are held in May each year as border collies from across the United States work sheep, cattle, and ducks! The events are patterned after trials held in Great Britain for over a hundred years.
During Spring Farm Days and Fall Harvest Festivals, families are invited to Hickory Flat to learn about when farming was a way of life for most of our ancestors. Activities include demonstrations in blacksmithing, chair caning, tinsmithing, woodworking, soap making, bookbinding, butter churning, and wagon rides and 19th century children's games.
Children's Barnyard Birthday packages are available for a total of 12 children and adults (birthday child free), which includes one tour event (Dairy Tour, Harvest Tour, Hayride, or MAiZE) at the farm. Call for details on package costs.
