Chicago publishing magnate Colonel Robert R. McCormick willed his 500-acre estate - named Cantigny in honor of the first American battle in World War I - as a public park and recreation area to the town of Wheaton upon his death. His grandfather, Joseph Medill, built the house located on the estate in 1896, and the first and second floors are open for public tours.
The museum also includes 10,000 square feet of interactive and experiential exhibits, including dioramas depicting battle scenes and barracks that incorporate actual artifacts from World War I.
The outdoor park contains tanks from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War that children can climb on.
Cantigny also hosts seasonal outdoor concerts - from bluegrass to symphony and it's home to a 27 hole golf course (and a 9-hole Youth Links course), several excellent restaurants, nearly three miles of nature trails, picnic grounds and a playground, and Bertie's, a gourmet coffee and ice cream shop.
