Characters and clams are in great supply - though not at the same time - at the
Cape May Cafe. And while the breakfast buffet is a hoot, the clam bake dinner buffet could use some tweaking.
First, this is one of the best casual character breakfast dining options on Disney property. While busy,
Goofy's Beach Club Breakfast is far more subdued with far less noise and commotion than at other character meals across property. Maybe it's the get-ups of Goofy, Minnie Mouse, and Chip and Dale - they're dressed in swimsuits and beach wear (Goofy even wears an inner tube) - that offer up a relaxed atmosphere. Certainly the serving staff also helps with fast drink refills and buffet recommendations.
For the money, the breakfast buffet is a decent deal - especially if you bring your appetite. Choose from fresh fruits, eggs in a variety of states (scrambled, omelets, etc.),
Mickey Mouse shaped waffles, cereals, baked goods, and more. Take your time and make the most of your meal. The characters make their way around the restaurant, so if the family doesn't gulp down their food too fast, you should be able to "chat" and take pictures with almost everyone.
Now, on to dinner. The
Clam Bake Dinner Buffet is a perfect stop for fans of all-you-can-eat clams and mussels, but lacks the finesse of other better Disney buffets (like the
Boma buffet at
Animal Kingdom Lodge). Service is still friendly, but the food selections (again, with the exception of the two items above) are rather tasteless.
Dinner items include New England Clam Chowder (which we joked had more - and bigger - clams than the actual seafood part of the buffet where we found most of the clam shells empty!), a carving station with meats, salads, ribs, corn on the cob, potatoes, clams, mussels, fish, and more. Kids can choose from
macaroni & cheese, fish nuggets, and chicken strips. The
dessert bar (the first thing you'll see when you enter the restaurant) offers small items like cookies, brownies, and cupcakes.
Highchairs are available and kids can entertain themselves with crayons and activity sheets; ask for multiple pages if you have a squirmy toddler.
