The coaches, George, Sasha and Valeriy are all former Olympians or Olympic coaches. They also coach the Stanford teams. So as you would expect they are excellent fencers and understand the teaching of fencing extremely well. What is less obvious is that they are also very understanding with the kids. There are a couple of extremely strong kids and a bunch of up-and-comers (which is where my child is). They treat them all well, pushing them when they need it and supporting them when not. My child feels that they focus on him -- which is what he should feel -- but I see them do the same equally with the others. They are very fair and generous and don't play favorites. They have helped my son become a good fencer and may be able to make him great They are also good with sportsmanship, unlike some of the other coaches I see at tournaments. I had heard that the coaches from eastern Europe (strong fencing countries anyway) are excellent with kids. Now I've seen it in action and I'm very happy with it.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Cardinal is quality of care. The coaches, while being Olympic medalists and champions, have a paternal side in private lessons and classes. Friendly fencers, including some of Stanford's varsity, complete the atmosphere. The other most notable aspect is the facility, which contains plenty of space between strips, providing optimal safety. It also doesn't hurt the kids to fence in air conditioning when it's summer.
