Attached to the mainland since the 1930s and part of the Boston Harbor Islands, Castle Island is said to be the sight of the oldest continuously used military fortification in the U.S. Initially called Fort William when it was built by the British in the 1600s, the fortification came into American hands in 1776 and was renamed Fort Independence in 1799.
There's great bike riding on the island. Kids and parents can ride for miles along the beaches on a well-maintained boardwalk. As you ride away from the parking area, the view of the city across the water is stunning. Parking at Castle Island is free, and there is a large playground and snack bar near the parking lot. Friendly dogs are everywhere - but if you bring yours, be sure to take a leash.
Part of The Boston Harborwalk.
tips:
There are often swimmers, but consider the quality of the water in the Boston Harbor before you let your kids go in.

My boyfriend took me there when we first started dating. Its a great place to go and walk, and talk. Love watching the planes land at logan, and just feeling the breeze from the Harbor is wicked awesome.
This place have become my family favorite. My 4 year-old loves walk around checking everything from little crabs on the beach to cruise ships on the harbor. It's a great place to have fun.
