The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, an Episcopal cathedral, is a leading voice in the exploration of sacred arts and liturgical expression, and in the work of building community in an otherwise fragmented world. The largest cathedral in the world, it is over two football fields long - the Statue of Liberty would fit comfortably under its central dome.

Public Tours:
Highlights Tours of the Cathedral run Tue-Sat at 11am; Sun at 1pm. Explore the many highlights of the Cathedral's history, architecture, and artwork, from the Great Bronze Doors to the seven Chapels of the Tongues. Learn about the Cathedral's services, events, and programs that welcome and inspire visitors from around the world. Adults $6; Students and Seniors $5. Meet at the Visitors' Center; no reservation is necessary.

Vertical Tours of the Cathedral are offered on Sat at 12n and 2pm. On this adventurous, "behind-the-scenes" tour, visitors climb more than 124 feet through spiral staircases to the top of the world's largest cathedral. Adults $15; Seniors and Students $12. Reservations can be made online.

Spotlight Tours of the Cathedral are offered on select Sat and Sun at 1pm. These tours, led by senior volunteer guides, delve deeply into the Cathedral's history and symbols. Adults $10; Seniors and Students $8. A schedule of upcoming tours can be found online.

Family Medieval Arts Workshops are offered on select Saturdays, 10am-12n. Children and families explore the arts of the Middle Ages through stonecarving, weaving, sculpting, and more. Ages four and up, $6/child; $8/child for special seasonal workshops. A schedule for upcoming workshops can be found online.

Medieval Birthday Parties can be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays. Children ages five and up can sculpt gargoyles, weave, make brass rubbings, carve a block of limestone, and more during a two-hour party in the Medieval Arts Workshop. Call the Public Education and Visitor Services Department at 212.932.7347 for more information and reservations.

The Congregation's Sunday School Program meets Sundays at 10:45am in the undercroft. Open to children ages four to 11, The Children's Abbey teaches the Judeo-Christian tradition through religious ritual, story telling, the medieval arts, and exploration of the sacred spaces at the Cathedral.

tips:

Family resources including scavenger hunts (in English and Spanish) and activity sheets are offered for free at the Visitor Center, located inside the main entrance. An access ramp, ideal for strollers, is located on the North side of the Cathedral on 113th Street, between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive.

getting there:

The Cathedral is located at 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, one block east of Broadway. By subway: 1 or 9 train to 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway station. By bus: M4 or M104 to Broadway and 112th Street or the 11 to Amsterdam Avenue and 112th Street.
