About Central Park Row Boats

Row, row, row your boat, and let the kids take turns when your arms get tired. Renting a Central Park rowboat gives you a great excuse to explore the marshy areas of the park, keeping an eye open for turtles, frogs, ducks and swans. Not recommended for small, or extra-bouncy, children. You ARE issued life jackets, but one look at the murky water and you'll hope not to have to use them.

The boats carry up to five, rowing is your job (and the kids will be thrilled when, because you can't see where you're going, you end up in an inadvertant game of bumper boats), and wear clothes that can get wet, because they will!

Gondola rides for up to six people are available during the summer from 5pm-9pm, Mon-Fri, and 2pm-9pm, Sat/Sun, at a fee of $30 per half hour. Call 212.517.2233 to reserve.

Getting There

Enter the park at Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street and walk west, then slightly north.

This is a really wonderful place to take your friends, family and/or significant other. It is a lively place, but not crowded, because the lake is so spacious and irregular. There are many little niches where you can get away from the open to spend some private, quiet time by yourself and your company in your boat. It is worth the $10-12 (it was $10 when I went a few years ago, I guess it went up to $12 now), and it is worth every dollar. No $30 deposit is required, even though they mention it in their online ad. Anyway, bring a picnic along so you can relax on the grass under the trees after your row-boating adventure!

My husband & I took the "row boat" tour on the advice of a carriage driver. We loved it! We've been to the city several times and this is the best $10 we've spent there. You get the boat for an entire hour and we were not required to leave a $30 deposit that the above article said you would. Caution: let the parents row if it's a busy day! We had several near-misses with kids that were rowing and not able to control their boat, but it was still so enjoyable...the lake is huge and the views are unmatched!
