Child's Play is an acting program for young people that offers weekly classes during the school year and an intensive summer workshop during the month of August.
Students ages four to six take part in theatre games that inspire self-expression and build characters that give voice to their unique personalities. A fable or fairy tale, which the class re-interprets through improvisation, is woven into each class. Techniques of acting as well as specific voice and movement work are an integral part of the curriculum. Visual arts, mask, puppetry, and costume work augment the workshop and support imagination. Classes culminate in a performance for friends and family.
The three-week intensive summer acting workshop for young theatre buffs, ages seven to 11, includes acting technique as well as specific voice and movement work. Students use masks, puppets, and music to generate and explore characters. Scene work is used to teach script analysis and character development.
As the class progresses, students rehearse a play to be performed for parents and friends. Past shows have included Annie, Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Once Upon A Mattress, and Into the Woods.
