Founded in 1901, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles began with four beds in a converted private home. Today, it is affiliated with the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and has become a world resource for advanced pediatric care. The 314-bed nonprofit hospital receives 180,000 visits per year from patients ranging in age from newborn to 18. Through its multidisciplinary leadership in pediatric and adolescent medicine, CHLA has been a pioneer in "family-centered care," including support services for parents and siblings. Every year since beginning its annual "America's Best Hospitals" issue in 1990, U.S. News & World Report magazine has listed Childrens Hospital Los Angeles among the country's top five pediatric facilities (or first in all but three eastern states). The CHLA medical staff is composed of 350 community physicians and more than 250 hospital-based doctors who are members of the University Childrens Medical Group (UCMG), the largest pediatric multispecialty medical group in the United States. They routinely top the "best doctors" rankings of various periodicals and books.
