The
Children's Museum of Tacoma opened in 1986 in downtown Tacoma, and moved in 1997 to the historic Kress building in the Theatre District.
Permanent exhibits include
A Place to Play, a tot-sized neighborhood for preschoolers with play houses and props, and
Becka's Studio where children and and adults can create art work.
The Learning Lounge strives to provide easily accessible parenting and child development information. Adults have a quiet space to review learning materials, while children play with related toys and activities.
The museum is quite small and has a homey feel to it. Staff were exceedingly pleasant during our visit and encouraged our six-year-old to
"touch everything." The exhibits are hands-on and encourage interaction between children and adults, with several two-player games scattered throughout the space. The hands-on activities are well-designed to appeal to younger kids, as well. Even if they can't understand the concepts presented, toddlers will enjoy playing with the objects.
We saw a
puppet show during our visit, presented by Tacoma Waldorf School. The presentation was short enough to hold the attention of younger children, but interesting enough to appeal to older children. Our daughter expressed some disappointment after the show that she had been given "too much help" with a craft project based on the theme of the show.
There didn't seem to be quite enough
adult-sized chairs, so that parents might catch a break while still keeping an eye on the kids. We got the feeling that this may have been a deliberate act, in order to encourage adults to be actively engaged with their young companions.
Birthday Parties: The basic party package includes admission for 20 children and an unlimited number of adults, along with a balloon bouquet and t-shirt for the birthday child for $150. Another $100 gets you a hands-on party activity led by museum staff and paper goods. Themed parties, extra balloons, and other add-ons are available.
