Travelers once paid a nickel toll to cross the Colorado River; and an extra nickel for a horse. In 1902, the bridge was washed away in a flood and replaced with a new bridge that was better equipped to handle cars and other vehicles.
But the main attraction happens at dusk, from March to early November, when the estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that roost under the bridge head out for their evening hunt.
