Cookie Cutters, the winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Kids' Haircut in Philadelphia, is a fantasy world for kids where they just happen to be able to get a haircut - seven days a week.

Kids can choose from a motorcycle that actually revs up, a red convertible, Clifford the Dog, and a pink roadster to sit in while the clippers are at work; regular chairs are available for big kids. Shampoos occur in a red fire truck, with the water coming from a fire hose. A flat-screen TV provides additional distraction.

Additional services include hair braiding and beading, Shirley Temple manicures, and mock shaves with lots of lather for little boys.

Birthday parties, scheduled around regular business hours, and include all of the above plus balloons and refreshments.

I, too, wanted to like this place on concept alone. I just returned from Cookie Cutters, and I think I just may be the angriest mom alive. This was my little guy's first real haircut at 17 months old, and the woman there just butchered his hair. It resembles a military haircut with a mullet. This after I told the woman specifically to keep the length when she was cutting it.

2 pm on a Sunday

I really wanted to like this place because I thought the concept was great, but I came away feeling irritated and ripped off. The receptionist and the stylist barely looked at us when we walked in, although the place was completely empty, and didn't seem interested in giving us more than the minimum service. The stylist seemed to have little experience with hair or with children, and barely spoke to my kids, though she wasn't unkind. When my daughter climbed into one of the chairs/cars, I observed that it was still covered with a previous patron's hair. Finally, the prices for the haircuts were nowhere to be seen, and turned out to be around $20 apiece - for that I expect something special, and the haircuts were just OK.

My husband has taken my two-year-old to Cookie Cutters twice. Both times his hair looked like his younger brother cut it. There were big chunks of hair taken out all over his head. It was really bad. We gave Cookie Cutters a second chance because the concept of the place was pretty cool. We won't be giving them a third chance.

We love Cookie Cutters; we've now been there several times. My five-year-old even asks to go get his haircut, and afterwards they never want to leave, they have so much fun playing on the climber and the porch. The front porch waiting/play area even has an airplane haircut chair your reluctant little one could sit in to see what it would be like. The haircuts have been cute and staff friendly and great with my kids.

I must rave about Cookie Cutters in Chestnut Hill. I recently took my two-year-old son there and was very impressed by the experience. We were there early on a Saturday morning; although the salon was very busy, the stylist (manager) was so attentive to my son. The experience was excellent and the haircut is GREAT. I will highly recommend Cookie Cutters to all my friends.

We had an appointment and waited at least 15 minutes. We were the last appointment of the day and the stylist was rushed and a bit shrill with our son, age two. When asked how the cut was, I pointed out a part that needed help and was chastised. Now that we are home, I see that area really did need more attention. It was really disappointing all around. The little fire truck, motorcycle, etc. is cute for the kids to sit in, but we felt so rushed that I think my son didn't get to enjoy it much. We wouldn't go back, considering it was hardly worth the 40-minute drive we had. (We were hoping his first haircut would be special).

Cookie Cuttters is great for kids, but the receptionist seems distracted (engaged in personal cell phone conversation while dealing with customers). It's also difficult to get hold of someone when you call - usually go through to voice mail and no call backs.

My kids love this place so much that they would willingly get their haircut every week if they could. From the fun vehicles that kids sit in during the cut, to the extensive DVD collection from which they choose to watch during the cut, the entire experience is designed to amuse and distract even the fussiest of children. The stylists are professional and are extremely patient. Although the prices are not cheap, you leave with a balloon, a lollipop and, most importantly, a happy child!

The front desk women wasn't very friendly and the cut was $16.95. I thought that was kind of expensive; my daughter is only 2. But I loved the stylist and my daughter did love sitting in the motorcycle. I think I will visit again because it was very kid-friendly, and like I said, the stylist was very nice.
