Cornerstone began in 1991 as an urban alternative to the public school system for pre-Kindergarters through the eighth grade. It's a Christian organization that is open to children of all faiths.
The uniformed students at Cornerstone Schools attend 11 months out of the year, from September through the middle of July. A YMCA-run latch-key program is available.
In 2005, the Skillman Foundation announced Cornerstone as one of the recipients of its Good Schools grant program.
