Founded in 1979, the theater is housed on level one in Hallmark's Crown Center shops. The Coterie is among the top five theaters serving families and young audiences in the United States. Travel & Leisure Magazine's top ten list of children's theaters described The Coterie as "a theater that resolutely refuses to talk down to it's audience." The mainstage season consists of productions both for older students (junior high and high school) and adults and for younger audiences and families.
The company also offers classes year-round both at Crown Center, Legacy Park Community Center, 901 Bluestem Drive, in Lee's Summit, and in Overland Park at Miller-Marley School of Dance.
Half-day camps during the summer are offered at various locations throughout the metro.
