This is the centerpiece of
Cranbrook, the internationally renowned art, education, and science center that also houses the
Cranbrook Art Museum and the
Cranbrook Institute of Science.
The Arts and Crafts-style
Cranbrook House was built for Cranbrook founders George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth. The house's designer, Albert Kahn, is the same fella that designed the
Belle Isle Conservatory, the New Center's General Motors Building, and the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.
Visitors can take both guided and self-guided tours from May to October, but even if you don't take the house tour, the more than 40 acres of gardens themselves are worth the trip. There are formal gardens, an Oriental garden, a wildflower garden, an herb garden, as well as sculptures, fountains, streams, and a lake.
Self-guided garden tours (Adults $6; Seniors $5; Families $15) are available daily from May through September and on weekends in October.
