about Dallas Museum of Art:
The Dallas Museum of Art is one of those museums where families immediately feel at home. From the gentle incline (no stairs on the main floor, just an undulating corridor with art beckoning on all sides) to the spacious and packed-with-interesting-mementos gift shop, the museum seems to have families specifically in mind.
Established in 1903, the museum features an outstanding collection of more than 23,000 works of art from around the world, from ancient to modern times. The museum also has a long history of providing varied and dynamic programs, events, and exhibitions to engage visitors more fully with the art.
A special audio tour of the collections is provided free with paid admission, especially designed for parents and children to take together. Be sure to ask!
All of the restrooms in the museum are equipped with diaper-changing stations. Nursing mothers are welcome to use the Family Library in the Gateway Gallery.
Family programs on the weekends include films and creative workshops.
Summer art camps for kids are led by professional instructors in art, photography, and video. Camp schedules are posted on the museum's website. A registration fee is required.
The museum's Atrium Cafe serves kid-friendly food, and high chairs are available. All of the museum's public galleries are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
Public tours are free and scheduled every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Ask for schedules at the Visitor Services Desk.
The museum offers free admission on the first Tuesday of every month.
tips:
Don't try to do too much with young children in a single visit. Looking at two or three works of art can make for an entertaining and enriching experience. For ideas on what to see, ask at the Visitor Services Desk or see the helpful folks in the Gateway Gallery family area.
getting there:
Parking is available in the museum's underground parking garage, located between Harwood and St. Paul, adjacent to Woodall Rodgers Freeway, for a flat rate of $5.
