Home to the annual summer
Shakespeare in the Parkseries, the
Delacorte was built in 1960 and offers a large fan-shaped stage with rising tiers of seats. The front lawn features bronze statues of four
Shakespeare characters: Romeo and Juliet, and Prospero and Miranda from
The Tempest.
The late Joe Papp championed the use of the
Delacorte as a free theater experience dedicated to Shakespeare's plays, and his vision continues today, conjuring up wonderful theater for all.
There's a two ticket per person limit, and tickets are available on performance days beginning at 1pm at the
Delacorte and through an
online ticket lottery. In addition, a limited number of tickets to specific 2010 performances are distributed on special days, at select locations throughout the five boroughs, including Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and more.
The Public Theater is currently not distributing tickets downtown at 425 Lafayette Street due to construction.
In the event of rain, the theater may delay the beginning of the performance, but the show will go on if and when it seems possible. Tickets are good for the day issued only. If the performance is canceled because of rain or any other reason, tickets are not valid for re-issue or exchange.
There are separate ticket lines to accommodate people with disabilities and senior citizens ages 65 and older (proof of age or disability is required). For information about wheelchair seating, call 212.539.8659.
