The world's largest collection of
desert flora is almost always in bloom at the
Desert Botanical Garden, the
winner of our 2008
Parents' Picks quest to find the
Best Enviro-friendly Place in the Valley.
DBG is located next to the
Phoenix Zoo in the red buttes of
Papago Park.
Even die-hard couch potatoes enjoy exploring the Garden's 50 acres of lush Sonoran landscaping and attendant wildlife. Over 10,000 plants flourish here, including 139 rare and endangered plant species from around the world.
Guided tours are available to all guests, including daily
bird watching walks. Customized tours are also available for
school and adult groups.
During winter and spring months, kids can visit
Target Kids' Corner for face painting, crafts, and more, and families can become
Desert Detectives by picking up a free game sheet at the admissions counter.
Stroller and umbrella rentals are available, as are inexpensive
trail guide booklets - a must for those wishing to explore independently.
The
Desert Discovery Trail is paved, easy to navigate, and leads to all the other trailheads and facilities. Don't miss the
Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail, a 1/3-mile adventure featuring an Apache wikiup, a Pima household, and
interactive exhibits. During cooler seasons, kids can stop at trailside Discovery Stations to see, smell, touch, and
taste desert plants.
Workshops, classes, and seminars are offered monthly. Photography, art, crafts, and all things horticultural are just a few of the topics covered in the age-specific classes. Check our
event calendar or the Garden's website for current offerings.
Kids can also find an assortment of desert-themed books, games, and toys at
The Garden Shop, located in the Exit Courtyard. The shop offers a full array of plants, souvenirs, gifts, and home items. If you forgot the sunscreen or camera, you can grab those here, too!
The
Fabulous Food Patio Cafe is located on Ullman Terrace and provides Garden visitors a lovely spot to relax and enjoy iced tea or bistro-style fare (seasonal hours apply). Kids under 12 can choose a peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese sandwich, with chips, from the
children's menu. Vending machines are also available.
Family-oriented
memberships are available; check the website for details and prices.
