about Detroit Historical Museum:
The Detroit Historical Museum is one of the coolest cultural establishments in Detroit. Its ten exhibit galleries include the Motor City exhibit, Frontiers to Factories, and the Doorway to Freedom (a view of the city's role in the Underground Railroad).
Walk through cobblestone streets and shops from the 1840s, 1870s, and 1900s in the Streets of Old Detroit. Located in the lower level of the museum, the attraction gives a true glimpse of what it was like to live in Detroit years back.
Younger children flock to the Glancy Trains, a toy train exhibit where kids can operate crossing gates and blow whistles - and a camera mounted on the train gives them a neat view in the overhead "choo choo" cam.
The museum's New to the Collection exhibit features a variety of recently collected artifacts - including an array of items mined from Tiger Stadium.
The museum welcomes school groups and periodically offers teacher workshops.
On weekends, parking is complimentary with museum admission; on weekdays it's $3. Metered parking is also available in the immediate area.
Annual family membership is $65.
tips:
If your kids really dig the Historical Museum's train exhibit, consider taking them on a factory tour of Lionel Trains in Detroit's northern suburb of Chesterfield Township.
