Dinosaur Ridge is an
outdoor museum and part of the Morrison Fossil Beds National Natural Landmark. Many of the finds from this location can be seen at the nearby
Morrison Natural History Museum.
The Ridge features historically famous Jurassic dinosaur bones, such as Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus, discovered in 1877, and over 300 Cretaceous dinosaur footprints, attributed to ornithopod and theropod dinosaurs. The imprints of dinosaurs are, by and large, still embedded in rock as they were initially discovered. Guided and self-guided tours are available.
The
Trek Through Time exhibit is a permanent, walk-through installation and features fossil displays and murals that evoke different environments at different prehistoric dates, with special interpretation of Colorado's ancient environments.
Interactives like the
Goldilocks Footprint Experiment and the
Dinosaurs in Our Backyard Computer Kiosk can be manipulated and explored, showing kids concepts such as how footprints are preserved and how layers of rock form. In 2009, several hands-on Touch Carts were added to the exhibit hall to satiate kids' desire to poke, prod, and touch things.
