Formerly the Metropolitan District Commission or MDC, this agency of the state government is the oldest regional park system in the country. It oversees the management of almost 20,000 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and parklands. The Hatch Shell, Blue Hills and Beaver Brook Reservations, as well as the Esplanade Playground, are all part of the DCR.
