You've probably zoomed by this popular park driving along Colonial Drive and never realized it was there, but Downey Park offers a wealth of recreational activities that belies its proximity to the busy road.

The actual entrance to the park is located on a much quieter side street, and a smaller tot playground and open grassy areas under a canopy of trees offer a secluded place to play and picnic.

The action really picks up in the middle of the park. There are a number of pavilions that can be rented, making Downey Park a popular place for local family reunions and birthday parties. Many of the pavilions and picnic areas also have grills, so bring those hot dogs and hamburgers (or veggie patties).

The main playground has seen better days, but that won't keep the kids from sliding, crossing the bridges, and more. The floor is mostly wood chip with some padding, so closed-toe shoes are probably a good idea.

The nearby sand beach offers a fun place to dig, as well as watch the numerous jet skiers on the lake jump and do tricks. Kids can also visit the seasonal splash park, though its operating hours vary widely because of maintenance and staffing.

The complex also offers a small skateboard park (a helmet and pads are strongly recommended), sand volleyball court, basketball courts, and baseball fields. Families can even bring Fido along for the day - there's a nice fenced in dog park at the edge of the complex.

The park also offers recreational programs and the Camp Scooter Camp program through Orange County Parks and Recreation. Call for more information on availability.
